First Claggett Ancestors in America

Thomas Claggett 1671 Maryland

The earliest know Claggett ancestors is Robert Claggett (1490-1703). The first Claggett to arrive in the British Colonies was Thomas Claggett. A wealthy gentleman, he emigrated from England in about 1671 and immediately bought large tracts of land.

Samuel Claggett, the fourth great-grandson of immigrant Richard Claggett, married two sisters, daughters of Thomas and Kesia (Wilson) Sanford. I am descended from first cousins Ruth Matella Claggett and Luther Sanford Beasley. They were married 20 Aug 1882 in Lexington, McLean County, Illinois. They had seven children.

Due to the large number of descendants, the line of descent below is abbreviated.
